Bio:

Luis is from New Mexico and attended NMSU where he received a BS in chemical engineering. He then went on to work for the United States Navy where his work focused on the extraction and testing of energetic materials. Testing encompassed kinetic, sensitivity, and performance analyses of ordnance materials as well as ensuring safe explosive operations. After working jointly on projects with Purdue University, he enrolled in graduate school there. He received an MS in nuclear engineering from Purdue in 2006. His thesis detailed the processing of acidic nuclear waste via steam reforming. This research led to his PhD work at Texas A&M in Materials Science and Engineering. His dissertation covered the conversion of cesium and strontium bearing nuclear waste into a ceramic. Luis recently relocated from Illinois, where his work at Argonne National Laboratory included radioactive decontamination, immobilization of radioactive isotopes, and lithium ion battery development.

 Luis Ortega is currently researching accident tolerant fuels that will mitigate contamination in a disaster situation. After an earthquake and subsequent tsunami in March of 2011, the reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant in Japan lost cooling capacity. This lead to core melting and a radiation release. One of the complicating issues was the hydrogen explosions that occurred. Steam reacted with zirconium, producing explosive hydrogen gas. In his current research, Luis is investigating the process of manufacturing a fuel which does not require zirconium cladding and therefore avoids these complications. He also assists younger researchers in the lab with their endeavors.
